Mio makes Knight Rider GPS official

Mio makes Knight Rider GPS official with summer intro

Mio announced some details of its Knight Rider GPS device for North America. In addition to a look that reflects the original Knight Rider series’ KITT car, the normal navigation voice has been replaced by original KITT voice William Daniels; turning on the device gives a randomized greeting with Daniels speaking any one of 300 first names as well as turn-by-turn directions. The GPS device also promises a true mid-range GPS unit with a 4.3-inch touchscreen, pre-supplied maps of the US and Canada, and four million points of interest spread across both countries. Mio is launching the Knight Rider GPS slightly earlier than expected and hopes to ship it during the summer for its originally suggested $270 price.

Mio rolls out C620 GPS with 3D landmarks, new UI

Mio today released C620 GPS navigator, bringing with it features not often seen in most GPS units. The 4.3-inch touchscreen device is the first from Mio to ship with the company’s 2008 GPS software and adds an advanced level of 3D compared to most GPS units. In bird’s-eye view mode, the C620 provides full, 3D representations of major landmarks and also provides elevation for bridges and significant inclines; drivers no longer have to be caught by surprise by changes in the road or their relative positions.

The software is also clearer in pointing out signs ahead and is faster to get its bearings than on old models. Each system includes Bluetooth for hands-free calling and MP3 playback that can be paused or resumed without interrupting navigation; both receive speed camera updates in European form, while the C620t adds Traffic Message Channel support for live updates of conditions, including in 3D mode. A camera-based photo tagging system that lets users share images online is standard for either model. Mio is shipping both the stock C620 and the C620t today in Europe with maps of the area but with pricing varying by the country. A version with North American maps is probable but unannounced.

Mio DigiWalker C220

For less than $300, the Mio DigiWalker C220 works right out of the box and gets you where you need to go with little hassle. While we have a few quibbles (like no live traffic, a less-than-spectacular screen, and no external volume controls), the C220 is perfect for the avid car renter or the family that wants a multi-vehicle GPS device.  To lower the price, Mio is using an SD card instead of the embedded memory. For practical reasons, the multimedia functions have been removed too. That’s a great idea because they have no impact on the GPS function (I don’t care about MP3 and video in a GPS unit, do you?). Also, I’m not sure that there is enough bandwidth to support playing media and streaming maps at the same time.

Mio DigiWalker C220

The Mio C220 has several advantages against the competition:

  • The map animation is very fast (much faster than expensive units like the Garmin Nuvi 660 (read our review with video)
  • The address entry is the fastest because it remembers the last few cities that you went to
  • The UI is nice and friendly
  • It’s cheap!

As with all GPS units, there are times when the device chooses a route that is not as smart/easy as you would like, but I don’t think that any GPS out there is really all that smart, including the pricey ones. Eventually, they (almost) always get you there.
Quick facts

  • Cold GPS Fix: 2 minutes (tested)
  • Hot GPS Fix: less than 30 seconds (tested)
  • Screen: touch screen
  • Maps: U.S maps preloaded
  • Points of Interest (POI): 3.5 Million
  • Voice: Turn by Turn voice (no text-to-speech = doesn’t read the street names)
