Can I take car GPS on an airplane?
I have a flight tonight to visit the University. We do not know the area, so we thought it would be really useful and much easier to use the GPS. Can we make as a lead on the point? It will be turned off at any time. I was just curious. I could not find any information online on the subject. Please and thank you.
The FCC prohibits the use devices by passengers who have a wireless signal. This is because certain signals to certain appliances (other than GPS signals, like cell phones) could interfere with instruments in the cockpit and / or radio transmissions. GPS signals do not interfere with the instruments, like all airlines and many small aircraft use GPS to guide them along their flight path. Using GPS on board your flight would not interfere with pilots in less so, but if you are caught using the devices, you may encounter legal sanctions the FCC or FAA.
